How to export all your ChatGPT chats (3 easy ways)

If you use ChatGPT every day, your chat history is full of useful work: drafts, code, plans, research and answers you may want again. That history lives on OpenAI’s servers, and it is easier to lose than most people think. A chat can be deleted by accident, an account can be locked, and long conversations are hard to search.

The good news: saving your chats takes a few minutes. Here are three ways to do it, from the built-in option to a full backup.

1. Use ChatGPT’s built-in data export

OpenAI lets you download a copy of everything in your account. This is the official way to get all your data at once.

1. Open ChatGPT and click your profile picture.
2. Go to Settings, then Data controls.
3. Click Export data, then confirm.
4. Wait for an email from OpenAI with a download link. Download the file soon: the link expires after a short time (24 hours at the time of writing).

You get a ZIP file. Inside are two important files:

• chat.html: all your conversations in one very long web page.
• conversations.json: the same chats in a format for programs, not people.

Good for: a complete safety copy of your account.
Not so good for: finding, reading or sharing one particular chat. Everything is in one huge page, maths and code are not formatted, and you have to request a new export every time you want an update.

2. Export the chat you need, in the format you need (free)

Most of the time you want one conversation as a clean document: a PDF to share, a Word file to edit, or Markdown for your notes. That is what AI Chat Exporter does, for free.

1. Install AI Chat Exporter and pin it to your browser toolbar.
2. Open the ChatGPT conversation you want to save.
3. Click the AI Chat Exporter icon and choose a format: PDF, Word (.docx), Markdown, HTML, JSON, plain text or a picture.
4. Click Export. The file is saved in your Downloads folder.

Code blocks, tables and equations keep their formatting, and after each export you see a short check (for example “12 of 12 messages”) so you know nothing was left out. The whole export happens in your browser: the chat is never uploaded anywhere.

3. Back up your whole history in one ZIP (Premium)

Tips for keeping your chats safe

• Store a copy somewhere else. Put your exports in a cloud drive or on an external disk, not only in your Downloads folder.
• Back up regularly. Once a month is a good habit if you use ChatGPT for work.
• Remove secrets before sharing. Chats often contain passwords, keys or personal details. Check an export before you send it to someone.

Deleting a chat in ChatGPT does not touch the files you have already exported. Once a chat is saved on your computer, it is yours to keep.
