Markdown, PDF, Word or JSON: which format should you use for your AI chats?
Each export format is good at something different. Here is a simple guide to choosing between Markdown, PDF, Word, HTML, JSON, plain text and pictures for your ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini chats.
When you export a conversation from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or another AI, the format you pick decides what you can do with it later. A PDF is perfect for sharing, but awkward to edit. Markdown is perfect for notes, but confusing to someone who has never seen it. Here is how to choose.
The quick answer
| Format | Best for | Opens with |
|---|---|---|
| Markdown (.md) | Notes apps and long-term archives | Obsidian, Logseq, Notion, Bear, any text editor |
| PDF (.pdf) | Sharing, printing, sending to clients | Any device |
| Word (.docx) | Editing and turning a chat into a report | Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice |
| HTML (.html) | A faithful copy you can open in a browser | Any web browser |
| JSON (.json) | Developers and data processing | Code, scripts, data tools |
| Plain text (.txt) | The simplest copy possible | Anything |
| Picture (.png) | Sharing a short exchange on social media | Any image viewer |
Markdown: for your notes and your archive
Markdown is plain text with simple symbols for formatting, like # for headings and ** for bold. It is small, works offline, never goes out of date, and every notes app understands it.
AI Chat Exporter’s Markdown keeps code blocks, tables and maths (as LaTeX, with $...$ and $$...$$), and adds the chat’s title, date, link and tags at the top of the file. Apps like Obsidian read that information, so your chats become searchable notes you can link and tag.
Choose Markdown if you keep notes in Obsidian, Logseq, Notion, Bear or NotePlan, or you want an archive that will still open in 20 years.
PDF: for sharing and printing
A PDF looks the same on every phone, computer and printer. Our PDF export includes page numbers and keeps code and equations readable, so it is ready to attach to an email or hand to a colleague.
Choose PDF if someone else will read the chat, or you need a fixed record of what was said.
Word: for turning a chat into a document
AI conversations often become the first draft of something bigger: a report, a proposal, a lesson plan. AI Chat Exporter creates a real Word file (.docx), not a web page renamed to look like one, so it opens cleanly in Microsoft Word and Google Docs and you can edit it straight away.
Choose Word if you want to edit, restructure or add to the conversation.
HTML: a faithful copy in your browser
HTML keeps the look of the conversation, with formatting, code highlighting and images, in a single file that opens in any browser. It is a good “just in case” copy when you are not sure what you will need later.
JSON: for developers
JSON stores every message with its role and order in a structured way that programs can read. Use it if you want to analyse your chats, feed them into your own tools, or move them into another app.
AI Chat Exporter Premium also exports special developer formats: OpenAI fine-tuning (JSONL), the ChatGPT official export format, SillyTavern / TavernAI and Oobabooga.
Plain text and pictures
Plain text drops all formatting. It is useful when you want to paste a conversation somewhere that does not understand formatting.
Pictures turn a short exchange into a neat image, great for showing a funny or impressive answer on social media. There is a high-quality option for sharp text.
